Sigma Theta Tau International is nursing’s premiere honor society. Founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School of Nurses, it has grown to an international organization, incorporating in 1985, it now consists of 451 chapters on college campuses world-wide.orangecoastcollege.edu More than 405,000 members have been inducted across the world with 130,000 active members, making it the second-largest nursing organization in the world. Founded on the Greek words Storge, Tharsos and Time meaning "love,"courage" and "honor", the organization exemplifies excellence and achievement in all that it does. The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, is to provide leadership and scholarship in practice as well as research, education and technology to enhance the health of all people. Interest in establishing a Sigma Theta Tau Chapter at UMKC was expressed by various faculty members for several years prior to program accreditation.

Virginia Nixon, former Director of Undergraduate Studies was instrumental in nurturing this interest in scholarship recognition. In the fall of 1985 Professor Nixon became seriously ill; however, she continued to inspire faculty in the realization of her dream. Prior to her death, Dr. Veronica Conners, Dr. Jean Braun, Dr. Jan Russell and other members of the Steering Committee laid the groundwork for a future Sigma Theta Tau chapter by developing a UMKC Nursing Honor Society. The first Steering Committee meeting was held on July 2, 1986 and from that point committee work progressed in earnest. Bylaws were written and a financial plan was put into place. A chapter application subcommittee investigated the chartering procedure for a future Sigma Theta Tau chapter. On March 24, 1988, the UMKC Honor Society sponsored its first annual research day.

Carol Germain, RN, EdD, FAAN served as the keynote speaker addressing the issue of "Qualitative Empirical Nursing Research". Eighteen research projects were presented. The second annual research day cosponsored by the UMKC Nursing Honor Society was held on March 23, 1989. The theme was "Nursing Research: Making a Difference". Sixteen nursing research projects were presented and for the first time awards of excellence were given to a paper presenter, Priscilla Wallingford, RN, MS and a poster presenter, Carol Byrd, RN, Ph.D. After significant growth and development of the Honor Society’s membership and leadership, a STT evaluation visit was requested and set for March 29-30, 1989. Dr. Kathleen J. Mikan, STTI Secretary was the Evaluation visitor. After review of all aspects of the Honor Society including membership, committee and financial records, student, alumni, administrative and community support, numerous positive observations regarding rapid growth and demonstrated leadership within the nursing community. Dr. Mikan recommended our prospective chapter for STT membership to the president of STT who in turn communicated that to the House of Delegates. Membership into STTI is by invitation only. Members must all meet the criteria of Academic Integrity - "A commitment, even in the face of adversity to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.

And that is exactly it, is it not, dr. k? That is exactly what nourishing connections teaches us.miad.edu Hard solid sturdy food—fiber and chicken and potatoes and fruits and vegetables, they fill us up because they are hardy sturdy stick to your ribs—like Vincent’s touch. I do not laugh at The Velocity of Gary—I am moved touched disturbed by the film. Vincent’s talents ignored again, savagely. I know Velocity was long before Brokeback and has to be a much more stirring, startling, and necessary story.nationalald.org How many times have I looked at a prostitute when I knew exactly what I was seeing and did not want to see, to touch, to know? For all the sympathetic, think we understand short stories and teleplays about ‘hos, no one gives them honor as does dan ireland’s film.

What I find fascinating is Vincent’s emergence from that into Law his little girl the castle, all that is left standing at the end. But a family created: a street hustler, an HIV positive former doughnut hostess, the baby of a dead porn star; she, the last, named Hope. Uncomfortable as they made me my best scenes, my favorite scenes, Vincent kissing and being kissed by Gary. Sensual power rating: 563,000. Kinetic sexuality rating: 729,000. Portrayal of real love, naked honest lust on screen: numberless. The way V’s character lays his head back and lets Gary kiss his face—I’ve never seen V that tender with a woman. And why do I write all of this to you, dr. k? Cassendre Xavier’s Pink Ediccione confirms that. I for the first time sit and watch a film bare-breasted, water cracker crumbs dusting my breasts from the peanut butter and crackers I nibbled as the film began. Soon the intensity took over and yes, dr. k, I was thinking about freedom, liberation, license. I will feed my body, my consciousness, what it asks for and find that way to health.

Many people believe they have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The majority have been told by their medical doctor that they have CTS. Others have mistakenly concluded that because they have some numbness and tingling in their wrist or hand, they must have this neurological disorder. Still others have ongoing forearm, wrist, or hand pain (possibly localized to the thumb and/or index finger), and are led by articles they've read on the Internet to diagnose themselves with CTS. Why are so many diagnoses of this condition mistaken? The primary culprit is lazy clinical decision-making, compounded by a failure to understand correctly the workings of the musculoskeletal system.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a specific diagnosis which involves mechanical pressure on the median nerve as it passes through a small tunnel in the wrist created by tiny adjoining bones. There's not much room in this carpal tunnel and its dimensions can be narrowed further by inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Pregnancy can lead to CTS owing to increased fluid retention. Repetitive stress may lead to inflammation of tendons that cross the wrist. Such inflammation may lead to soft tissue swelling which compresses the carpal tunnel, causing CTS. Various other disorders should also be considered when CTS is suspected.

Importantly, CTS is not a catchall diagnosis to be used when a person has forearm, wrist, and/or hand pain. If a person really has CTS, he or she will have specific symptoms. The person will awaken at night owing to pain and/or numbness and tingling.auburn.edu Symptoms will be precisely located to the thumb and index finger (possibly involving the middle finger). Wrist pain may or may not be present. Also, the person will demonstrate a weakness of pinch grip involving the thumb and index finger. If these signs and symptoms are not present, the person does not have carpal tunnel syndrome. Usually, the diagnosis is clearcut and does not require special tests such as electromyography. Remarkably, most physicians, regardless of specialty, are unaware of these important criteria.

If the patient has pain and/or numbness in the hand, the patient has CTS. Many of us live with allergies, reactions and sensitivities. I am personally very sensitive to mold. I can smell it a mile away and slightest taste makes me hurl. Mold found in materials, walls and structures can cause me to become physically ill if I am exposed to long. In the past I have just tried to deal with it and avoid mold when possible. However, a recent question was recently posed to the medical field that caused me to change. The answer comes from the Honor Society of Nursing (SSTI). Synthetic materials are much less likely than natural fibers to attract and hold mold spores within your home or workplace. Whenever possible, use synthetic fabrics for things like clothing, bedding, furniture covers, and curtains.

Examples of synthetic materials include polyester, nylon and acrylic. There are several options when it comes to purchasing pillows with synthetic material. The cheapest synthetic filler is polyester which is non-allergenic. Not only is it great for keeping the mold away but it can easy allergies. Polyester is manufactured in pellet form used in bean bags and large floor pillows or in smaller micro-beads used in bed pillows and support pillows. Another popular option is synthetic down which is a polyester threading that is shaped into long singles threads to mimic lofty down clusters. Genius. This is my favorite because it is the perfect substitute for the goose down pillows and body pillows I use to have.nationalald.org It's cheaper then natural down, hypoallergenic and easy to care for. I also found some fillers made from synthetic microfiber which can change shape and size to conform to the body. Microfiber is used for many purposes and is a great synthetic material for furniture and other home furnishings. With so many synthetic materials available it's easy to prevent mold and reduce sensitivities, allergies and reactions. If this is a problem you experience I would recommend making changes, starting with your bedding and see how much better you feel.

I didn’t start drinking until I was separated from my husband. I got the house, but selling it was the only way I could survive, so that is what I had to do. I had the summer to get the house ready and for the first time in my life, I was alone. I was suffering from depression, losing my world as I knew it, my family, my security, my collective identity. I just knew that I wasn’t equipped to make it in the world on my own. Marrying young, way to young, I never was able to define myself as an individual.

I was a small part of a collective, part and parcel of a pair. Now I had to figure out what to do. Embarrassed, I never looked to anyone for help, I felt too vulnerable for that, and distrusting. My husband taught me that. I only knew what my husband told me, and to go against him while being afraid of him, being afraid to be without him only confused me more. I went to a wholesale club type of store, the type where you buy the super-size versions of everything. Here’s 500. Need some toilet paper? Here is enough to last a family of 4 for a year. I didn’t even know how to shop, how to budget, how to deal really with anything, my husband did and now he was gone.

I walked past the alcohol section on my way to the bakery section, about to buy 24 muffins for just me, when I saw the magnums of champagne. I thought they were so ridiculous, laughing to myself while thinking, I wonder how long a bottle like that would last? So since I was alone and could do whatever I wanted, I bought it and a 2 gallon jug of OJ, mimosas sounded like the perfect idea. I can finally use my champagne flutes I bought a long time ago for no apparent reason, we didn’t drink. I drank the whole magnum in two days, and didn’t feel so great, but I did like how I felt drinking.

I wasn’t really worried about anything, and I liked that. The problem now was I had no more champagne. A problem that is easy to fix. I went back to buy two more magnums. This time I didn’t need any OJ in my mimosas. I didn’t need my champagne flutes either. They only hold four ounces and after the bubbles subside it is about two anyway, so out came the tumbler. That way, I could dip my feet in the pool and not have to keep to keep running back and forth. When I was drinking, everything could wait until tomorrow, which was great, because I sure as hell couldn’t deal with anything today. My life was no longer anything I recognized and being alone was unbearable, so I decided to take a friend’s advice and head out, which meant go to a club.

I never really did that, a few times maybe married, but that was it. We didn’t do that either. Now, I can, so I will. I used to love dancing as a teenager and I realized I missed it. I started going out, loved it! No worries, all smiles, new friends, new clothes that were club worthy, the discovery of different drinks, like vodka and cranberry, all this made me feel like I had a lot of catching up to do! Still losing my house, my former self and I wasn’t going to deal with that, because thinking about ’that’ sucked. I started drinking six days a week; the seventh was reserved for a 16 hour ‘nap.’ Then the cycle started again. I became engaging, felt fabulous, was cooler than most, and had the best friends ever.
