Ladened with lagoons and consistent seasonal wind, Kalpitiya's a well-known destination in the kitesurfing world. The wind's more cross-shore at Pottuvil Beach and relatively solid, although conditions aren't as clean as Arugam Bay and there are a couple of rocks to avoid in the water. Like most curry spots in Sri Lanka, the dishes are made ahead of time, left to simmer on a heated buffet.

The Kitesurfing schools in Kalpitiya offer sessions at several times of the day depending on the course you are interested and your schedule the schools will personalize your splendid Kitesurfing schedule on your Vacation in our beautiful emerald island.

We run our trips to a large lagoon near to a small town in Sri Lanka's north west called Kalpitiya for complete beginners to advanced kitesurfers. It's just an awesome contrast of the flat water in the lagoons and the wave of the Indian Ocean just on the other side of the sand bank.

I do not know if I have seen any better flat water spot. This is the closest spot to the main Kalpitiya Lagoon, approx. And the nice thing about Sri Lanka and Vietnam is that their main windy seasons are opposite from eachother. The main spot is Kalpitiya lagoon. If you get bored of flat lagoon, you also have the ocean to play with.

After crossing to the sandbar, walk along the beach to the small hut located between the sea and the lagoon. Donkey Point - This kitespot is about 20 minute tuk-tuk ride down South-west from Kalpitiya. It can vary from 12m weather all the way down to powered on a 7m, so taking a few kite sizes will pay off and make sure you get the most water time possible.

But what a bunch of people don't know is that there's a pretty stellar lineup of other kitesurfing spots in Sri Lanka that, so far, are skimming blissfully under the radar. One is called Wellai island, and the other is where we went: a thin long Sand Route on the west end of the Kalpitiya lagoon (check our map).
