Construction began in November 2008 following the February announcement that planning permission had been approved. The new Birmingham Coach Station has now openned. The first buses have left Birmingham's Digbeth Coach Station following a £15m revamp. The station, which has been shut since November 2007, includes a new concourse, information centre, a cafe, shop and toilets. While it has been shut, coaches have been operating from a temporary station on the opposite side of Digbeth. The coach station will be officially opened on Friday by England football manager Fabio Capello. So proud' Three million people are expected to pass through the new station, which has a sweeping copper canopy, every year. The first coach to leave the new station was being driven by Ray Wicketts, who was also the last employee to drive a coach out of the old site.

The station, which has been shut since November 2007, includes a new concourse, information centre, a cafe, shop and toilets. During the closure coaches have been operating from a temporary station on the opposite side of Digbeth. The coach station will be officially opened on Friday by England football manager Fabio Capello. The opening of what is now being called "Birmingham Coach Station" brings to an end a protracted saga which has lasted more than a decade. The old Digbeth Coach Station was universally hated by passengers. It was originally used as a Midland Red bus garage, and later converted into a coach station. Dark and dingy, it was never an ideal arrival point for people coming to Britain's second city. Unsurprisingly National Express coach firm was keen to provide a more modern and appealing coach station. It originally sought to move away from Digbeth with two alternative sites being seriously consider. Both were close to Snow Hill railway station, but, despite several years of planning, both schemes fell through. By then Digbeth had become a much more desirable site. The opening of the Bullring shopping centre and the planned regeneration of Birmingham's Eastside meant the site of the existing coach station became more attractive for redevelopment.

One of the coaches includes a bespoke luxury kitchen in the rear of the vehicle for use by the club chef, as well as private internet server, Wi-Fi, USB connections and satellite TV. When they are not transporting top football teams around the country, the coaches will also be used for touring and school work as part of the company’s Claribel service fleet. "Previous experience combined with good reliability, build quality and performance, meant we had no hesitation choosing Volvo once again for this latest purchase. Phil commented: "We are very pleased to be providing these new vehicles to Birmingham International Coaches. Birmingham International Coaches is a well-regarded and long-established family operator, with a high profile and strong reputation within the industry.

If you don't fancy catching the train, then you have the option of getting on a coach. Birmingham Coach Station is just a five-minute walk from the City Centre and is easily accessible by car and public transport. I have been here whenever I have travelled to Leicester and London. The coaches are regularly on time and I have not had any issues with this place. If you are waiting for your coach, you can always grab a coffee at Starbucks or you can even go to WHS Smith to buy a newspaper/magazine or even some sweets. The one downer is the fact you have to pay to use the toilets. I just find that ridiculous. But there is a toilet on the coach if that is any consolation. From here you can get on coaches that will take you to cities across England, Scotland and Wales.

National Express, Ulsterbus and Eurolines are the three operators that operate at this coach station. And I have also found it is a lot cheaper to travel by coach than train. It is not that expensive to travel by coach. The staff here are very friendly and they will answer any questions/queries you have. An excellent station in my view and one I will continue to visit. Getting from Birmingham by coach to Heathrow means a stop here or at Birmingham International Airport. I prefer this location because it's a real station, unlike the airport which is really only a bus stop. Employees are quite friendly. There's a Starbucks for coffee and a bookstore for reading material.

It's quite close to the Bullring and Moor Street Station. I used to use this station loads but haven't for nearly a year. Couldn't be bothered to use the self service machines as there wasn't a queue at the desk. The guy who's name was Will was really chirpy and helpful. The station is generally clean and tidy with customer service advisors around to help. EVER - a big graffiti style mural that reads 'welcome to Digbeth bab'. In Irish this is "C'ead Mile Failte" so the sign is obviously a nod to the Irish history of the region. Step into any of the pubs round Digbeth and you're likely to see these words over the bar. Pretty good coach station, bit annoying that it's in Digbeth! If you've got awkward/heavy luggage and you come from New Street, then you've got quite a good walk!

Best taking a taxi down there. Waiting rooms are big so plenty of space, 30p for use of toilets! There's a Starbucks, Whsmiths,NISA and a smaller cafe (sandwiches/ hot drinks). Following its move from one side of the road to the other, Digbeth's Birmingham Coach Station ticks all the boxes for those travelling by coach. It looks more appealing from the outside than it ever did in its old incarnation and, whatever time of day or night you may be waiting for your National Express coach, the station waiting area is perfectly acceptable and comfortable. My first experience of the new station was awaiting a long journey to Glastonbury 2010, which meant we were nestled up on the seats inside at an ungodly hour. The facilities were decent, with a couple of choices when it came to food, drink and other time-killing purchases, and clean loos too.

The layout is clear so you won't be confused what doors you need to be at when different coaches pull up - if you get on the wrong one, then you haven't paid attention frankly. Our very own modern built coach station! It was a long time coming for Birmingham but it was a worthwhile wait because this new station (only a few years old) is a great building. I often use the coach station in Digbeth because I travel to London on a regular base, so the location for me means it's easier to get back home via the transport links i.e. train or bus.

I've always been concerned at the lack of parking though at the station; it's not very good especially if someone is coming to pick you up and they need to wait a few minutes for you to arrive. There's just a drop off point which often gets clogged up with traffic because that same road is the route for the number 50 bus to Moseley/Kings Heath and it's not a quiet area in general. I really wish this had been taken into consideration a little more when the building was being built. Apart from that, the indoor space is lovely. There are plenty of seats to sit and chill while you wait for your coach. There's also a Starbucks in there and a WHSmith which are handy. My favourite thing about the coach station is the fact, they have cash points indoors!

You don't understand how much this makes me happy, lol. It means when you are rushing to get to the station, you catch a taxi early in the morning but realise you have no money; you can ask the taxi man to wait while you withdraw money. I think it's so convenient especially for regular coach travellers. When learning that National Express were investing millions of pounds in Birmingham's coach station, I didn't blink an eye. It didn't interest me. Now I am grateful they did, people's first impressions upon visiting the area is very valuable hence why making this transportation location look a lot more modernised was instilled. No longer an eyesore it is far more comfortable and has a secure feeling about it. The amount of times I have travelled to and from university in Leeds are countless. I was impressed with the new infrastructure, it has different vending machines, a shop inside and many seats. My one big criticism is having to pay 30p to use their on site toilets. With that said, I have often paid ten pound for a one way ticket and you can use the toilet free of charge on the coach, so my money has been made back over the years. Fabio Capello opened the National Express station, he showed his belief in the trusted company although I am sure he used a different form of transportation on that day.

Birmingham Coach Station (formerly Digbeth Coach Station) is a major coach interchange in Digbeth, Birmingham, England offering services to destinations throughout Great Britain and also to Belfast and Dublin. The original interchange was built on the site by Midland Red in 1929 to be used as a bus depot. This was later converted into Digbeth Coach Station. The old coach station closed in November 2007 for redevelopment and during reconstruction National Express used a temporary site in Oxford Street on the opposite side of Digbeth High Street, called Birmingham Central Coach Station. The new station has been awarded an 'Excellent' rating under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method - the most widely used system for judging how environmentally friendly a building is. ↑ LSH plays integral role in £15m redevelopment of Birmingham Coach Station. ↑ Outline Planning Application Press Release. ↑ SBS Replaces Make.

Thousands of fans will be boarding coaches when the Saddlers hit the road to the national stadium for the first time. Supporters using travel organised by the club have been faced with paying more than other independent transport operators. Walsall are charging £30 for a return trip for the historic Johnstone's Paint Trophy final on March 22. However, spaces elsewhere have been available for as low as £20. But the club say 40 have been booked and 35 already filled, with room for 48 supporters on each one. They had to increase the numbers being provided from the original 10 due to demand. The club say it will be fleet of luxury executive coaches from Birmingham International Coaches, who also supply the team bus. It is going really well, we have got 10 available and we anticipate they will sell out.
