Ladened with lagoons and consistent seasonal wind, Kalpitiya's a well-known destination in the kitesurfing world. Wind on the ocean side will be more steady then the lagoon. It's not located directly at the Lagoon, but they provide frequent boat transfer to the southern part of the sandbank. If you have a few days to spare, venture out to the East coast of the Island and take a train trip from Kandy to Ella through the Ceylon tea highlands.

The main area for kitesurfing is in Kalpitya, at north of Sri Lanka, where you have huge flat water lagoons and great winds and warm weather. If you want to learn how to kite surf, we recommend kitesurfing in Sri Lanka. Whether it be on the flattest water possible, kickers, or the most gnarly waves in the area, I just want to find spots and ride them.

More steady winds mean flatter water, making winter a great time for other activities such as diving, whale-watching, or dolphin-watching. The teeny tiny island sits bang in the middle of the waters north of Kalpitiya- and man oh man, is it ever stunning. The main spot during summer is situated just a short trip by car at a small headland.

Riders need to master upwind riding skills though the presence of a rescue boat is better, in case the winds push you away from the island. Check our Travel Tips to Sri Lanka , Wilpattu National Park , and Kitesurfing Mannar for more ideas on the tropical island.

Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka is simply as good as it gets. The windy season spans from mid-May until September, so there is plenty of time in the year to visit without worrying about wind. Kalpitiya is an ultimate destination for all kite-boarders visiting Sri Lanka. Just get up in the morning and have some fine Sri Lankan breakfast, and then wait for the wind.
